I think they can adjust. Since most people suggest the morning light that's what I did originally, but it did not work well because here in the high desert the morning temps can be brutal, while it can be rather temperate in the first few hours after the sun goes down, hence I have over the last 3 winters extended their evening light. I have the lights go on with timers when the sun goes down, that includes outside small floodlight types light, the chickens keep running around for a few hours after dark, amazing actually how they have adjusted to the dark and run through the darker areas to get to another lighted area, when I come home from work I flip the switch so the timers do not turn off the lights. I go out around 7 to 8 pm to check if they have retreated to their roosting spots and then turn the lights off myself, that allows me to grab anybody who hasn't gone to a roost yet and put them in a safe place, but for the most part they have already assumed their spots and are just waiting for the lights to be turned off.
