I don’t know how it happened. I went to pick up turkey poults from my “Fowl Guy” and got to talking about Modern Garmes. He said he had a day old on the porch…….his others were older and he wasn’t selling them right away but would sell me this one. I suspect he knew there was a problem, but he didn’t mention it. He also only charged me $5 for her and $3 for the Polish to keep her company.
She opens her mouth to inhale and I can hear a faint clicking sound. She does not act lethargic or in pain or even in a weakened state. She eats. The front part of her top beak seems loose……I think if I messed with it, it would come off. I have left it alone, although I do think if it came off, she would be alright because it doesn’t seem to be doing much good, anyway.
My husband just put some sides on a wire dog crate for me. He doesn’t realize that Stilts and Crackers may be indoors with us through the winter…….and by then, who knows if they will ever be outdoor chickens, although I would like to introduce them to my Silkie girls. The Silkies don’t free range like the others. They are in a tractor.

What exactly happened to her beak? It sounds to me like an obstruction of her upper airway that may be caused by her damaged beak. How is she behaving? Is she acting lethargic or slow? I had a rescued hen from a "free range" facility who had been de-beaked close to her nostrils. She occasionally would wheeze due the problems caused by the beak mutilation inflicted on her at the hatchery. She lived a happy, healthy life for years after rescuing her.

I have a hen that had an injury to her beak a week and a half ago. The top layer of her top beak was broken. The last two days she appears to be making a wheezing sound. I have some tetracycline. Should I give it to her? If so, how long do we need to not eat her eggs? Thank you!
