Jude, I fill my sink part way with warm water and a bit of bleach. I take each egg and dip/swish them in the water. If they have a spot on them I use a very soft nail brush to brush that part of the egg under the water then put them in a strainer or on a clean towel to dry. I do not soak my eggs because the water could be drawn into the egg as the water cools. I always swish and/or lightly brush them. I cannot afford to have the extra germs (heart/immune) in my frig to put my eggs in the frig straight from the barns. Cathryn

Ok, my chickens and ducks are not laying yet. So we are still buying our eggs from a local farmer.

I have read and seen a bit of discussion on the washing of eggs after they have been laid. I do not remember my grandmother ever washing our eggs unless they were really dirty.

The lady I just got our eggs from had a coffee can full of them sitting in the sink full of water soaking. I thought they were not suppose to be left in water for very long.

So what is the deal? Washed or not washed and if washed, How? I am not going to be selling any of my eggs at this point, they would be just for our private use.
