Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Sick chickens..plez help!

OK while good bio security is wise .... keeping wild birds away is almost impossible .... if your birds go outside. Now if you have fully enclosed housing with air filtration systems and filtered water with no interference from outside sources then you have complete bio security ( plus disinfecting everyone that goes inside and as they come out ).  But if you have outside pens and wild birds even perch on fence or top they can and will poop .... if you allow your birds to free range .... if you hold a bird and were in contact with or near someone who had contact with any other birds ... and the list goes on.  So I'd say test one bird and get advise from a qualified vet and treat accordingly.  Culling entire flocks should be the last alternative in severe and contagious conditions only or if you have unlimited funds.

Jen, As long wild birds can get in, there is no way to figure out what they have. Wild birds carry many diseases, everything from bacterial, mycoplasmas, to viruses.  It could be anything from a mycoplasma to Infectious Bronchitis to ILT...the list is endless.  I'd start over and make my pens wild bird proof.  If you have an in and out door for your chickens to go in and out, so wild birds cannot get into their pen, coop, feed, & water, then you could narrow the list down.  I have no idea what would or would not help. In your shoes I would test or cull the entire flock and start over. Basic bio security is keep the wild birds out..... The worst part is you can track to other farms and people's house birds.  I am so sorry.  Cathryn
