Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: FDA ties salmonella-contaminated chicken feed to egg recall

These are all reasons why we refuse to feed our dog commercial dog food (we could never get him to eat it anyway, not even the best or most expensive brands!).

He eats the way a dog should eat . . . there's no kibble, refrigerator, or microwaves out in the wild. "Dog food" is a relatively new invention. Its only been around maybe 30-40 years. What do you suppose dogs ate before kibble was invented?

With all the contaminants, foreign objects and toxins rendered into our pet food, its no wonder they have so many illnesses and such an array of veterinary specialties these days.

Ours eats a biologically appropriate diet of raw meat, bones (uncooked- cooked bones are dangerous), offals, ripe to rotting fruit, small amounts of veg matter (akin to what they would normally find in the gut of their prey). And dogs aren't meant to eat grain, which sadly is quite often a main ingredient is commercially prepared products and is at the root of many health problems for them.

Never thought I would be feeding a dog this way, after previously having feed commercial, but I tell you, it is the best thing we ever did. (You can google BARF diet for more information).

I am not so much concerned about disease, as most disease causing organisms are going to be killed in the process, but the chemicals are another matter, pesticide tags, flea collars, spot on treatments, if any of that is being used in food animals it ultimately ends up in our food.

I once found a rather large piece of a wire in a can of dog food (yes, the company is on the recommended list by Whole Dog Journal), I have no idea what material that was, I could not bend it with my hands but yet it did not stick to a magnet either. When I called the company first they said it couldn't be because of the magnets used in cow stomachs, so I said hold on, I got some magnets right here, it wouldn't stick to the magnet. The only reason I found it in the food was because I spooned it out and noticed something unusually hard. The fact that cows are given magnets so metal will stick to it in their stomachs is in itself a strange thing, why would cows be exposed to so much metal that this is a common practice?
