How to raise Backyard Chickens: [CHICKENS-101] Can you imitate free range?

One drawback with "seeding" the pen for grass; chickens will just think you are giving them a treat when you toss the seed out......

I use regular hay for my nesting boxes; when I change the hay out; I just toss it out into the pen; the birds comb it for any seeds left there....
