both of my parents told me independently from each other when I told them I had chicks that they used to raise them on finely chopped nettles mixed with boiled eggs. Heard if from others in Germany as well that this is the way to raise baby chicks. So apparently hasn't hurt generations of baby chicks growing up in Germany before the invention of chick starter. Nettles are sold as an herb with cleansing properties and they can be prepared like cooked spinach, though I think they are quite bitter
