Hi Bethany
Coops are easy! And anybody with any skill at all with a hammer and saw can build it. Salvaged materials can be used to cut cost, or reflect your personality. Anything that will keep the wind and rain and snow off and keep predators out will do. Build it big enough that the chickens have at least 10 or 12 sq. ft. each, but much larger is lots better. It can't be too big! An attached yard is good. It must have a fence high enough so the chickens won't fly over it and strong enough to keep dogs and the like from breaking in. If you have chicken eating hawks you will need to cover it with chicken wire or something. A feeder to keep the feed clean and dry, unless you feed wet mash, and a waterer that will hold a day's worth of clean water are needed. The chickens should have a foot of roost each and a nest box for every five or six hens will do. None of this needs to be fancy. I hope this helps.
