I was totally unscientific about it. She'd been broody for two or three weeks. Really determined, wouldn't leave nest for anything. Timid hen turned raging fluffball.
Anyways, I figured that I wanted to get some more hens anyways (need more eggs), so I might as well give her a try because I actually have no time or inclination to raise chicks myself (toddler plus newborn).
So I zipped to TSC, picked up some chicks and put them under her after everyone had gone to bed one night. I was actually in the barn working, so was able to check on them several times before I went in for the night and zipped out early the next morning. Everything looked good, so I put them in a cage and that's where they've been since then.
I figured I'd have some morality so I actually purchased more then I needed, but go figure, they are all alive so far. She is really a good mom, the chicks run in and out of her feathers and jump on her and peck her and she just does her job keeping them warm and showing them how to eat. Really cute pics are coming soon.
