Remember, "back in the day" there was no such thing as prepared chicken feed. Chickens ate what they found on the farm, table scraps and maybe some grain the farmer threw out to them. They more than likely did OK. It always seemed to me that animal feeds were first developed to provide for maximum growth and egg production for commercial chickens. Knowing this, I will continue to buy commercial feed for my few chickens, just like I will buy dog and cat food for my pets, just for peace of mind.
