Ok guys. Heres where i know i'll get some disagreement but i do not feed my layers mash AT ALL. Living on a dairy farm i have access to some alternative feeds. I grind corn for my hens (which i know is lacking protein wise, so for i while i didnt know what i was going to do to fill that void in their diet.) heres what i came up with:
Colostrum and other waste milk: absolutely chalk full of nutrients. does anybody know any reason for me not to use this? my hens love it and are healthy.
Silage: also almost as near as you can get to exclusive protein. They dont eat it as a food (like they would grain) but i mix in cracked corn and they get quite a bit of it that way. my production has picked up somewhat since then (down the last two days??) and they also get all sorts of bugs and the like (they are free range and are stationed at the edge of a many acred alfalfa field that they wander thru.)I give them crushed eggshell as well as constant access to oyster shell. Are there any comments on any of this and am i missing anything important.
thanks, keith
