I probably was not 'correct' in doing it my way, but I will say it worked very well with none of hen's/roo's fighting or any sickness at all, but in one coop we had three roo's and 19 hens and never had any kind of issue. The coop was 10'x16' with a run that was around 20'x30'. They could come into and out of coop to the run at their will since the run had a small section wrap around the side of the coop where there was a small sized 'doggie' door that I could control from other side of coop from the out side. I know technically there were too many in there, but as I said never had any problems, but will say I did have to clean it out very frequently since there were that many, but I could live with that part since we used pine shavings and that meant less than an hour for a good clean out and not expensive since a bale of the shavings here was only $5. Hope this helps you some way.
