Sheryl and Maureen, I feel your pain. I have two old cats that I
only got another cat, because it was a kitten about three weeks old,
born outside (it's mother was feral) and I didn't want it to become
coon bait. The two older ones never were good at using their litter
boxes, and one is in a cage (when she isn't outside), because she
will gladly pee and poop ANYWHERE. I had tried through the years to
get her to use a litter box, but she would not. This has been a
rough winter, and she has stayed inside, but in a cage with a litter
box and a bed. She has been known to poop outside of her litter box
and sleep in the litter box. I got her a fake wool bed and she does
pretty well, but does pee and poop in it.
Ironically, the little feral born kitten took to litter box training
at four weeks of age, and at five months old, does really well, with
very few accidents. Whenever we go to the bathroom, he has to go,
too, and does his business, because one of the litter boxes is in the
bathroom. Only fault he has is playing way too rough and biting
hard. I gave him a stuffed toy (Gary the Goose) and he chews and
kicks the tar out of it. I ask him where Gary is, but he has yet to
get it when I ask for it. Matrixx is a smart kitty.
Keeping this Chicken related, the chickens - and ducks - let Matrixx
know his low standing on the totem pole.
