Pete, What a great resource! Downstate we have city water for the house and can run a hose to the barns if the power is out.
I keep a bit of bottled water for up north. There is always the river for water if the power goes out. I like the rain tank idea; I'd like to do the same. We used to have a cistern and a dumb skunk fell in it. Of course by the time we figured out where the horrible odor was coming from, it was too late to fish it out. My husband filled in it, instead of putting a grate over it. (I could have shot him for doing it too.) Cathryn

We really don't use this water for drinking ...can use it for cooking but we would boil it first. We have used it for bathing / showers and toilet.
