Noticed this morning that one of our chickens has funny looking scales just above her foot and her whole foot looks odd. It is only her one foot that is affected She seems fine and none of the other chickens' legs or feet look out of sorts.
Is it possible that they are scaley leg mites? I'll try to get a picture tomorrow. It is really cold here, so I'm wondering if the mites could even survive in the winter.
If they are mites is it possible that she is the only one that has them. I have heard that you should wash the foot and then apply vaseline. Is there something else that is more effective? Is it really necessary to wash her legs and or feet? It is supposed to be -27 wind chill here tomorrow - granted the coop is not that cold (we have a heater on thermostat so that it stays around 20 degrees in there) but still.
What about the other chickens, should I treat them as well? We do have some poultry dusting powder (not sure of the name but for mites). Would that work? We have not dusted the coop in a while - though we did just change the litter last weekend. Put in all new pine shavings.
Any tips, ideas would be welcomed.
Thanks,
Marsha
