I had also always understood the rat poisons to be species specific - anti coagulants that have to be ingested over a period of time to be effective. Most seem to work this way - I asked a friend who's a pest control officer.
There is also a fibre based substance which is apparently 'eco friendly' but which leaves the rat to die of dehydration. Not what I'd go for, seems to me to be a pretty awful way to go.
I used to go ratting on the farms around my childhood home; one up in the beet store to flush them out and me at the bottom of the ladder with a plank of wood. Seemed at the time to be a serious issue. Now I know it was.
We'd get 50p a rat - that was enough back then to buy a new record - £3 for an album. Diamond Dogs was my first, I bought that in 1977. I thought it was punkrock :-)
