[CHICKENS-101] Help: Psycho hen with chicks

Hello group,

I have a flock of Old English Games, 8 hens and 1 rooster. 4 of the hens had chicks a month ago. 3 of the moms are already back free ranging with the flock and doing excellent. The other hens ignore the chicks, the rooster is calm and respectful. The 4th mom has issues. She was psycho before becoming a mom, a bully, roosting away from the flock. The flock now enjoys that she's segregated in a pen with her chicks. When I try to let her free, she's attacked by the rooster and by the hens, but they don't touch her chicks. I don't think more time separated from the flock will help her but I don't want her to be injured either, or her chicks loose without protection while she's attacked. I sure could use some advice.

Thank you,
Michele in NH

[CHICKENS-101] Re: sexing chicks

Unless you are a trained professional get someone else to do it. However, having made that profound statement there are a few things that work at least 50% of the time. Feather sexing works with some sex-link chickens where the wing feathers grow faster on the cockerel. This only works on some X-breeds and only in the first few days. One of the best entertaining games in the chicken world is trying to guess "Who is the rooster". The odds are that half the chicks are male. T

hat means that out of 1000 chicks half will be roosters. If you buy a half dozen you could be on the wrong side. About 4 to 6 weeks some bird will make a noise that approaches "rusty hinges", "nails on a chalk board" etc. You get the idea. This is practice crows. The next step is 'what do we do with it?
Good Luck
Ol'George

[CHICKENS-101] Turkey Qs-is it Gapeworm?

Hi all, I have a royal palm turkey who has been making this motion with his throat like he is trying to throw up, he is still drinking well but eating very little, he acts like he wants to eat but doesn't, he has lost a lot of weight. I have only seen him actually cough a couple of times and he does NOT have his mouth open. Someone suggested gapeworm so I treated him with safeguard for goats last week with little to no improvement should I treat again? Could it be something stuck in his crop? This turkey was brutally attacked by a dog 6 months ago and survived-his injuries were on his back and side at that time could it relate back to that? He was on antibiotics at that time. We moved to a new home (never any poultry on the property prior to us) about a month before this started. He is in a fenced in area with chickens and everyone else is fine. Any ideas?
thank you!
