Re: [CHICKENS-101] My Modern Game chick!

Laura, congrats on the little modern game chick! Is he a bantam or a standard? Of course we need pix.
Uh....................we are having rainy nasty weather and will be for the next nine months! I hope yours improves.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] My Modern Game chick!

Yup!! Nasty wet weather here in Erie PA!! Been raining since Sunday... my
chickens have a thin coating of mud all the way up their legs in into some
feathers, probably gonna break down and get a sibling to help move their
little house tonight.

Good luck with the chick!!
Lauren

[CHICKENS-101] Mice in chicken feed

For the past 4 years since we started keeping hens again, we have left the feeders in the pen and the coop and have never had a mouse problem. This summer I noticed mouse droppings in the food,so we started hanging up the feeders at night(the barrel of feed is in our store room covered. No more droppings until this morning.

Apparently they figured how to climb up the walls and onto the chain and drop into the feeder! The outside one that is also hanging up is not touched.

The coop has a cement foundation and we are seeing no holes or places they can get in after dark. However, the coop hen door is left opened at night that leads into the outside chicken pen. I figure they are getting in that way. No other signs of mice activities no droppings anywhere except the feeders. Should we just take the feeders inside at night or is there a safe way to get rid of the pests. Thank you for any help or suggestions oyu can give us.

They look like cute little miniature vultures to me!  We have four NN hens and two NN Silkie Roos.  The roos are naughty!

RE: [CHICKENS-101] My Modern Game chick!

It is with the little Polish and I don’t plan to add it to general population – if it makes it.  I just wonder if that scrunched beak is compromising it’s respiratory system and why it gasps….l can only wait………not much I can do for it.  In the meantime, it is a mouth breather………poor thing.  Tiny, too.  So tiny I was worried it would drown in the waterer, so I put gravel in it, just in case it fell in!

We are having a lot of rain……..flood conditions in the area.  Luckily, we are up on a hill and the rain runs down it………but all of the animals are wet.  They don’t have to be out in it, they choose to be!  The alpacas are muddy monsters……the chickens look like drowned rats with wings.  This weather makes me want to curl up and nap with a book all day…..but no time for that!

Anyone else having nasty wet weather?

Laura .... if the chick is eating..drinking and pooping normally I'd say it should be OK.  I have had a few with really wonky beaks that did well.  I would say only issue is making sure others don't pick on it.
