Re: [CHICKENS-101] more chicken genetics

I have raised pigeons most of my life. The last 2 breeds I had were white homers and Giant Homers. The Giants are about the size of a bantam hen. I have raised several different types of poultry. We used to do a lot of hatching with incubators. I live in Oklahoma where we have been going through various stages of drought. Last year we got some rains where I live but the ponds are starting to get low again now. We could use some of your rain here.

It is fascinating!
But I'm going to have to read it tomorrow.  It's 1 a.m. already.

Where are you, anyway?  It makes a difference.
I'm in southwest NYS, where we have long, cold, hard winters with deep snow.  And late springs, like this year.  Froze again last night.  Rained again today.

It rains in the spring and fall, snows all winter, and in the summer it's humid.  We do have lots of water.  But I wouldn't think of spraying water to break down pellets, something like that.  Keeping the coop dry is more of a problem because chickens give off so much moisture.  I leave the windows open year round, except maybe when it gets down below zero for very long and there's wind.

In my 70's, had chickens all my life, my parents raised chickens, my grandparents raised chickens, etc.  It's not a novelty, and I probably am a lot more relaxed about taking care of them than some people.  They don't seem to get sick.  Only real problems I usually have are predators and leg mites and sometimes a frozen comb.  Rosecombs do away with that problem.

I just keep a bag of the pine shavings on hand, dump in another one when I think it needs it.  Try to clean it out once a year.  I go in there barefoot, it's soft, dry and loose.  They keep it scratched up, mixed up, dried out all the way to the floor.

I used to use feeders and measure it out.  Getting old I guess, I just carry the 50 lb. bags in and lean them against the wall.  Open one, tip it over and let them have at it.  Seems to be working pretty well.  It's just a hobby.

I have a regular wooden henhouse, like a room or small barn.  Nothing fancy, been there 40 years, looks fine, big window facing south, sun comes in nicely in the winter, trees shade it in the summer.  I let them outside in the large fenced in pen in good weather.  When they can get out, they ignore the pellet feed completely.

Got a second, smaller box and cage for young ones.
I've tried a lot of breeds over the years.  Some successes, some failures, some not as described.  Being able to order a few of these and a few of those is great fun, and quite an education!

You have pigeons too?  I raised them for a while.  They seemed to have a lot of ailments.  There are so many interesting kinds!  I had white Indian Fantails, and white Homing pigeons, colored Fantails, American Fans, and a friend with roller pigeons and the ones with curls on their backs.  And the ones with a ruff on their neck that covers their heads.  All are great fun!  And English Messenger pigeons are a lot bigger than you expect.  American Fans bully the Indian Fans terribly, and so many people develop lung ailments from cleaning the droppings that I decided I didn't want to get that problem.  Chickens make enough dust as it is.

[CHICKENS-101] feed question

I was given a bag of DuMor Show Poultry feed.
As you may remember, my Ladies are having some missing feather problems. We had adjusted the population of the flock and everyone seems so much calmer, peaceful and happier.
I am currently feeding them DuMor layer pellets and a bit of scratch feed.
May I give them this show feed? Just a little bit each along beside the layer? Will it help with the feather re-growth? Or with it being medicated, will just mess them up more?
THANKS!

[CHICKENS-101] Chicken Lights

It just occurred to me that I have an easy solution to chicken coop lights at hand, but never tried it. How much light at night is a bad thing? How much light do they need.

My new idea is to drill some 3+ inch holes in the south facing roof and drop in solar rechargeable yard pathway type lights. They would charge all day and light all night.

[CHICKENS-101] My first year of chickens.... I have some questions and I have to brag a little on my rooster!

Can chickens choke? Our first rooster "Big Cogburn" mysteriously died. I found him in the coop one day just killed over. Not a feather out of place, the shavings weren't disturbed at all. His beak seemed all clear, no fluid. Couldn't see anything stuck. He was closest to where the food was. No puncture wounds or anything to indicate something malicious had happened.

So we ended up getting his half brother "Cogburn Junior". I joke we should have named him Marine because of his seriousness about his girls and his matching flat top. This is only our second rooster so I don't know what to expect. He gets very upset when his girls get messed with. I had one of my girls hurt her leg and I had my husband help me catch her and boy did he get upset. He wasn't physically aggressive but he was definitely telling me to put her down. Then he had to check her out when I was done to make sure she was ok. He has only tried to peck me once when I tried to pet him while he was roosting. I smacked him back.I have learned to let him sleep and if I have to mess with him, wait until the morning and he is sweet. I got 6 more chicks last night and my friend came over to see after dark. He was fine with me until I picked one up and when she flapped her wings he got so upset with me! He just yells at me to put her down! They were just there an hour or two and he was already the protective father of them! I'm amazed at how good he takes care of his girls. He will also find a bug and call all the girls over for it, he never eats it himself. He watches out for hawks and will call out for them to take cover while he runs the other way to sacrifice himself. They never have a feather out of place. He dances all the time for them! He has a stern beak for the little ones if he thinks they are out of place but never any blood or missing feathers. He knows where his girls are all the time and if they get too far apart, he calls them all to him.

My next question is more about hen behavior. I have a 5 hole nest box with 16x16 inch holes. Rarely do my girls sit together. They will take turns. When each one is done they start making a total ruckus. They are just a hollering and sqwuaking. So Cogburn runs over there and escorts her back to the flock in the yard. Then you see the next hen take off for the coop if she isn't already waiting on the floor of the coop. Is this normal behavior? I didn't know they made such a ruckus after they laid an egg! I mean they are loud. Each one does it although I think some girls are a little quieter about it.

Oh I have a third question. The other day I went to collect eggs and one was on the ground surprisingly not broken. My nest boxes are about 3ft. high. They never lay out of the boxes. None of my hens have ever gone broody but they are just a year old. Is that a sign that a hen didn't like that egg? Or maybe she just accidentally knocked it out when she got out? I haven't seen any signs of varmits but the door is open all day.

Any advice appreciated. EM

Re: [CHICKENS-101] more chicken genetics

I am sorry I do not know of a good book, I bought several but found they do not apply to silkies.  To many breeds have been used to obtain the huge crests of today.  Silkies are where my interests and passion lay in breeding chickens.

[CHICKENS-101] Broken egg on droppings board

My hens are fairly young (been laying about two months now). This morning I found a broken egg on the droppings board. Apparently a hen layed an egg while asleep? or ????

Just curious, has anyone experienced this before?
