I haven't done this just yet, I'm planning on starting a big batch
tomorrow saving all the peels and cores from apples destined for apple
sauce and pie filling.  Wish I'd known about this when I was making
many pints of apple butter.

Ordered a Victorio Apple peeler that cores, peels and slices that
works like a charm. Got it from Amazon.com but have absolutely no
economic interest in the company. Just a very satisfied customer so
thought I'd pass it on.

Looks pretty easy to me using organic apples (free for me cause they
are in my orchards). Just requires patience.

[CHICKENS-101] RE: Chicken Appreciation Day

Unfortunately, Chicken Appreciation Day won't be happening at the Harvest Festival this year (my wisdom tooth decided it needed to be pulled RIGHT NOW and I will be out of commission).  Chicken Appreciation Day will have to postponed... :(

moving back to Southern California.

As far as I can tell, it's just the tail. I've noticed that if she's a little up-tight, her tail is stiffly over to 9 o'clock; if she's relaxed, it may be only to 11 o'clock. Oh well, she's kinda cute that way...

And I notice the 7 pullets (now about 4 months old) are starting to investigate the nest boxes, and practice sitting in them!

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Pullet with strange tail

Rhonda, Sometimes things like that just add character.  I kept a kinky back chick one year who grew up to be a pullet I had brought from a breeder. (I think the over typey-ness just throws one once in a great while and not much can be done about it because the nature of the body shape.)   Not only did she take every new hatched chick she could adopt, but she was very tame.  She ended up being a favorite pet of every one because she loved to be held. I massaged her back for months to help straighten out her hip and back so she loved lap time.

[CHICKENS-101] Bumble Foot?

I have 4 Ameracauna/Easteregger hens. One a couple years old and 3 from spring hatch. My daughter picked up the older one and noticed the pad of her feet have a little dark sore a little bigger than a  pencil lead on each one. She is not limping, and it does not look red but may be slightly swollen. I checked the others and they have something smaller with no swelling/redness.

They are on clean pine shavings in their house and are out in the yard for grass/bugs all day. We have had lots of rain the past week or more and compost and other areas are staying a little soggy. Do you think this is bumble foot? I cleaned her feet and put antibiotic ointment on them.

I read online about treatment but wondering if anything else can cause this. I am thinking I should soak their feet and apply antibiotic twice daily and monitor. The is not the large amount of swelling I saw online so maybe caught it early enough? How often do you give your chickens the once over to check for problems?

Blessings,
