[CHICKENS-101] It's Springtime?
It's Springtime in the Rockies and snowing! There is about 2 inches now and still coming down and expected to keep on all day. And not long ago it was getting into the high 70s and low 80s and all the fruit trees have bloomed. No fruit again this year. Oh well! That's Springtime in the Rockies!

While I am hesitant to say if they do or don't "mourn", I will nonetheless propose a more likely scenario for the apparent loss of production and that is the social upheaval caused by the loss of the Alpha Male.
More than likely the single bird that is laying is the Alpha Female and the rest are not laying due to the upset in their hormonal balance resulting from the fighting that is going on to re-establish the peck order.
If you observe the flock carefully, frequently and without prejudice an opportunity has presented itself to learn a great deal about the dynamics of the peck order.

I have a hen who dug a nice crater in the dirt and is now sitting contentedly in it. Is she using this instead of her nice clean nest box?

When I come over Tuesday to get the chicks we need to spray them all. Please make sure I remember to bring it, ok? You have been down long enough from your surgery that your spray schedule is off and I'll give you a hand. OK? I'll also bring you a few things to help thru their molt too so you do not have to shop to gather it up. Cathryn

I am no expert on this but I am thinking it is possible that she or they can be in mourning. I am sure they feel like we do or other animals feel when they loose someone close to them.
