As many of you know, I made an incubator out of a wine cooler recently. When I thought all was running well, I put 2 test eggs in. They did great! On day 18 I moved the two eggs to the Styrofoam incubator my son made for increased humidity and no turning.... my eggs tend to pip on day 20. Out of curiosity I candled them this morning to see if they internally pipped. I DROPPED THIS ONE!!!! Oh no!! My kids are going to be so mad at me.
So why I am staring at it in disbelief.... it moves!!!!!!!
So I put it back in the bator!!!
To be continued.........

[CHICKENS-101] Re: Why why WHY?

"Why, Why, Why" - there are several possible reasons birds eat eggs:
1. They are "floor eggs" - I.e. not laid in a nest.
2. The feed is deficient in Calcium and / or Manganese.
3. The feed is deficient in animal protein.
4. The nests are open to the floor - I.e. the birds can't "hide" when laying.
    A. There is not enough litter in the nests or the litter is not deep enough
        to provide cushion when laid.
5. There are not enough nests for the number of birds.
6. The birds are too crowded - I.e. not enough floor space, range space per bird.
7. The bird(s) are bored.
and finally sometimes a bird is just contrary!

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Eric, may I introduce you to Sandie?

Sandie, there a mill up in Roswell.  It's called Alderman Cave.  And there are a number of places in Roswell to get feed too.  One of them even carries commercial skunk food.

What I'm feeding is  this........purina, I went looking for any other brand but nobody is carrying anything else.  So it's what has to be.

I've tried the dogfood story and that worked good......

Oh and tonight they had spaghetti, and bread.  I also had some corn that they liked it's not good for them in the heat......but this had bugs in it, and they loved the bugs.......

3 more weeks and they can move over to pellets but I'll have to go to texas for that.........and see if I can find something over there.

TS only carries purina.  I'll have to try some other source.

So I get to Tulsa Feed and buy Flea and tick shampoo, a dog collar,
extra rawhide bones and a couple of plants.
The next day Tulsa Feed gets Chickens in. Production reds, Orphingtons
and Americanas.
I'm broke! Chuck agrees to hold a half dozen Americanas and Orphingtons
for me until Tuesday.
10 minutes after Tulsa Feed closes today my friend comes over with the
cash he owes me. Now I have to wait until MONDAY!

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Baby Chick

Randy, I would take it out again, make sure it has enough heat and give it some water with a pinch of sugar in it and some crushed up feed. By now it is surely hungry.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Little Giant incubator.

We were at the farmer's coop today.  I've made my mind to pick up the Genesis 1588  in a few weeks.  Hubby was with me and I showed him the LG priced at $50+.  Then there was the egg turner... another $50+ and the box for LG showed a thermostat control for available.  All that adds up close to the price of the Hovabator with turner I want.  No brainer.

BTW - Lilly the banty hen has two perfect babies now.  One black with a gold spot on its head and the other a gold patterned chick.  Both wonderful barnyard mutts and I am thrilled.  She's staying in the cage with her chicks till they get bigger.  I love watching her cluck cluck to her children telling them about the food and being a wonderful momma.
