Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Poss-A-Dillo Hill is moving to Florida.

Is Larry cutting back on his breeders?  Or those 2 are being retired from the gene pool?

The guys fly to Sun N Fun anyway so I'd think they'd be happy for company in the trip.

When Mr. Percy gets home from work tonight I have some new pics to send you.  The Naked Neck Silkie, one of Petal on the floral sofa, and some of the house in Fla.  Don't wait up for them though, it will be after midnight by the time we have dinner and he gets to the computer.  And I think I've got the funding wrapped up.  We will know by noon on Wednesday!

Awesome!  Please tell Mr. Percy's friend that I would be more than happy to help out with expenses too!  Can't be cheap to fly around the country.  Yay!  I might have to make the drive down anyway.  Larry said I can have Red Dog and Dough Boy!  Cathryn

[CHICKENS-101] A Stray Rooster adopted us...how do we keep him warm in the cold?

Hi All!

New member here.  I posted this query to one of my horse forums and it was suggested that I pose the question to you knowledgeable folks.

Rooster wandered into our barn several months ago.  We suspect he came from the neighbor over the hill, but they don't seem interested in reclaiming him.  Of course after a couple of days we had him named, Doodle-Do, and were bemused by his antics.  We were happy to take him in.  But what do we do with him?

We've been feeding him chicken scratch.  There's plenty of bugs and crawlies for him to find around the barn and hedgerow.  We provide several water sources for him.  He's convinced the barn cat to leave him alone and our blue heeler knows The Do rules the barn.  The horses move out of his way when he strolls through and leave him alone when he makes a little bowl in the dirt to lay at the edge of their run-in.

It's getting colder.  What are we going to do with him?  He roosts on the metal stall bars along the horses' run-in.  Picture here:  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CHICKENS-101/photos/album/393273214/pic/list  It was suggested on the horse forum that his feet could freeze on the metal.  But, I believe his roosting up there has saved his life from the coyotes and raccoons that come through.

What are we to do with him in the cold?

Cath, would you believe Mr. Percy contacted one of his MI Ercoupe friends last night about bringing you down when he goes to FL for Sun N Fun!   Which is held in April.  Maybe it coincides with your school's spring break!  All things are possible with careful plotting!  It's a 10 hour flight.  MI to FL.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Sumatra Crow

I don't know about Sumatras, but when any of my LF cockerels start crowing, it sounds like someone dragging a fake, metal Christmas tree through a hole in a piece of sheet metal :-)

I guess this question is for anyone who raises or has raised Sumatras. My dad & grandpa raised them but I don't remember their crows. I have two young Sumatras I hope are a pair. One sings all the time a pretty sweet little tune so I named her Matilda. Her hopeful mate is Banjo. Banjo is larger & never makes a noise so yesterday when he let out this peacock type sound I nearly went thru the roof & I'm not typically jumpy. Is that a Sumatra crow? I kind of hope so as that would mean it is a roo. If so I can get use to the sound. I couldn't find a recording of a Sumatra crow online anywhere.
Please advise,
Marla

Well that made me feel a little silly. I searched on the net but didn't think about going to youtube. Lol. Well maybe he is a he & he's just learning to crow or maybe he's a she & she's psychotic & trying to scare me to death. Time will tell I guess. Marla

[CHICKENS-101] Skunks & other Predators (was Skunks)

I've had them eat eggs, & kill small chicks in the past.

When I was a kid, we'd stack concrete blocks around the outside drains if any were exposed to the winter weather. Then fill the space between with straw or leaves to insulate it; we'd also turn one block so the outside cats could get inside & stay warm. One winter, several cats disappeared with no explanable reason. That Spring; when I diassembled the blocks; I discovered what had happened to the cats; a possum or coon had also crawled in there & used our cats as their Winter food supply; the following winter; I began checking the "boxed-in area" regularly & didn't lose anymore cats.

Yes, all that is true.  Skunks can be pets, but they also carry rabies in my neck of the woods.  There used to be a vet in MO who had a standing offer of $100 for any road killed skunk that did NOT test rabid.  As I understand it, he had lots of skunks brought in, but he never had to pay out on it.

They are beautiful and furry, but they can also be very dangerous through the diseases they carry (without showing symptoms).
