Editorial - EU Authorises GM Maize, Identifies Broiler and Breeder Welfare Issues

The European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) Panel on Animal Health and Welfare has adopted scientific opinions on the welfare of broilers and broiler breeders.

For broilers, EFSA identified the major welfare concerns as those associated with genetic selection, including skeletal disorders leading to problems such as lameness, contact dermatitis, irregular body shape and sudden death syndrome. The experts highlight that the welfare of broilers could be improved if birds were genetically selected to withstand the environment they live in, including slower growth rates. They added that higher priority should be given to decreasing the number of lame birds and reducing contact dermatitis.

The main welfare issue in broiler breeders, according to EFSA experts, is linked to selection for high feed intake, which requires feed to be restricted to breeders to maintain good health. They recommend minimising competition for feed to reduce injuries and in the longer term, selection of birds that require less feed restriction. They also suggest stimuli such as perches and raised nest boxes, lowering stocking density and increasing light levels. Finally, the expert panel recommends that management practices aimed at reducing injuries should only be carried out – if at all – by trained personnel using the least painful method.

After years of back-and-forth procrastination, the European Commission has this week authorised six genetically modified (GM) varieties of maize for food and feed uses – though not cultivation – in the EU.

And finally, a further step in the concentration of the global animal health sector was taken this week as Sanofi-aventis and Merck announced their intention to combine Merial with Intervet/Schering-Plough, creating a new global leader in the sector to be called Merial-Intervet. Approval of the new joint venture by the regulatory authorities is expected early in 2011.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Baby Basketball and siblings

How sweet, they all are adorable.  Quite a bit of difference in size!  Baby B is the cutest frizzle!  I wonder what he is crossed with, he is so large. I hope he is a she so you can keep her for a pretty broody, rather than another he. Cath

from Georgia Wood included below]

Baby Basketball has developed a 'FOOF' on his head.  It looks more like a cow lick than a crest.  There's also a photo of all the chicks in the 'moving van' the day they got to go to their new outside home.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Busy day today .....

Make him swim in his pool with a cup of bleach in it.  Calls swim in a tub with bleach in the water before they go to show, even if they look snow white. Cath

Should have been done yesterday but my daughter was at a graduation part and I was at a baby shower ...   we have 13 chickens and a duck to wash to get ready to go to Fair tomorrow!  Washing chickens is always so much fun <insert sarcastic laugh here>.

Actually the chickens aren't bad ... it's the duck that is worrying me lol!  He's a Muscovy and quite large.  He doesn't swim on a daily basis, even tho the baby pool is available for him.  So his belly feathers are quite stained (grass, mud, poo).  I use baby shampoo for the chickens and right now that's pretty much all I have available for Goose (the duck) but I'm not sure it'll be enough to get those feathers back to white.
Any suggestions?

[CHICKENS-101] Sick chickens..plez help!

I posted this yesterday, but no one has answered yet... I am trying to figure out what my chickens might have, and what I should do. I have 20 chickens, and about 7 of them, maybe more, have watery eyes. I have 2 that are pretty bad, more mucusy and almost closed.. which looks ike conjuntivitis. But these that are really bad are also listless, just sleeping a lot. I have the real bad ones seperated from the rest. I am giving everyone Duromyacin-10.
Do you think that is about all I can do? I am not sure what else to do. If it is a simple virus.. won't this alone take care of it?
Thanks, Jen

[CHICKENS-101] Chicken saddles

I guessed someone called them saddles cos they cover the area on a chook that is the same as a horse, But apron doesn't sound quite right to me cos when I'm wearing my apron in the kitchen it is on the front of my body. But I saw a web site & they get called both things, so I don't think it really matters.
My freinds chook was viciously feather pecked by the other chooks. & when we had that really hot weather here in the uk a few weeks back, I was worried my mates chook would get sunburnt, So I made her one.(got instructions off our forum)
My mate would not put it on her at first 1 because every time she attempted to put it on her the chook would get so upset she would collapse in a heap & 2 my mate was overly worried that the chook might get caught up somehow in it.
I needen't have bothered making the effort, I spotted it on the floor the other day getting trampled into the ground. (I was there letting the dogs out for their pee & first I have to check all the chooks are in the compound, but her compound of electric fencing does not keep 2 of her chooks in as they keep escaping) ( I named one of them Houdini, which my freind liked & kept, she is a silver grey Araucana)
The chook still has a completely bare back but she seems ok. She has to keep out of the way of the other chooks though.
I think if it were me I would put beak rings on the bullies. But who am I to give my mate advice she's been keeping chickens longer than me.
