[CHICKENS-101] Busy day today .....

Should have been done yesterday but my daughter was at a graduation part and I was at a baby shower ...   we have 13 chickens and a duck to wash to get ready to go to Fair tomorrow!  Washing chickens is always so much fun <insert sarcastic laugh here>.

Actually the chickens aren't bad ... it's the duck that is worrying me lol!  He's a Muscovy and quite large.  He doesn't swim on a daily basis, even tho the baby pool is available for him.  So his belly feathers are quite stained (grass, mud, poo).  I use baby shampoo for the chickens and right now that's pretty much all I have available for Goose (the duck) but I'm not sure it'll be enough to get those feathers back to white.
Any suggestions?

Ah, your questions are quite logical.  The diapers are usually lined with something - paper towel, part of a panty liner, and checked/changed after a couple hours.  As for the saddle, that's not a term I would use, but they protect the hen from over zealous roosters who grab the backs of their necks during mating.  Which in the world of roosters happens in what I consider to be alarming frequency.  The item looks like a little apron, which would be my choice of word.

There are many companies making these items.  Tess' are less expensive then many and are the ones I have, so I give her a little free promotion here.  And if you have any other questions about anything, just ask.  Exchanging information is what we're all about here.

Hi,

This may be obvious to some, but I'm new to chickens (a couple of months now)... I can figure out why you would need a diaper on your chicken.  But how often do you change them?

Also, what is a saddle for?  I read on your site for 'protection' - from what? I'm confused.

Thanks in advance.

[CHICKENS-101] poison oak /drugs

Thanks Cath, I didnot know that hospitals dealt with drugs that way, shows how ignorant I am. When I've taken old meds back to the chemist (a scheme encouraged in the uk) I thought they had a safe way to do it but have never taken the time to find out what that way is. I will have to find out now! Jane & Co.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] To Georgia Wood re: Chicken Saddles & Diapers

O.K. I am NOT making this up. I am old (OK I feel like I am old with my disability). We had two BIG chickens get loose yesterday. Now I am not Rocky trying to defeat Klubber lang and there was no way I was going to try to catch a chicken. Now the good news is Storm, our dog, follows hand commands to a T. I can get her to go in any speed or direction I want. Now I have never taught her this.
So anywho Storm, Mrs. Crypt and I, managed to coral her into the house.
Now this Alcatraz escapee got on my Wyndotte run in the house. My Wyndottes were in there minding there own chicken business, when the big chicken took a MAJOR dump right on one of the Wyndottes  head. I wish I had one of those diapers.

I have a 5 L.E.D. Flashlight that appears to pierce my brown Wyndotte
eggs. I love L.E.D. Flash lights for tons of reasons.
More light.
Light is more focused than a regular flashlight that disperses quicker.
Lasts Longer.
Most come with chargers so no looking for Batteries! Let me tell you ,
Mrs. Crypt goes through batteries on the older Flashlights.
I have a laser pen I want to try but she took it away from me for trying
to blind the next door neighbors. If I can find it I will let you know
how that works!

This is actually a fairly good start for a friendship between two alpha males from different cultures, Mike. Face it, if he was a nicey, nicey subservient kind of guy you would be bored to tears with him. I have a feeling that most of your friends have "an edge", and you prefer them that way. (I know I do.)

Just don't be tempted to break it over his head. :)

I enjoy your posts so much, Mike. They usually make my day. Even bad days are better after I read your comments. Tell Mrs. Crypt she has a fan on the list, too.
