Hi everyone! Just wanted to drop a quick note to say that the chicken camping trip went great! The brooder tote fit perfect into the big deep trunk well in the back of the minivan so they had a safe trip there. Once at the site, they got a place of honor at our breakfast nook inside the camper and stayed there for the duration. Heat lamp was put on as needed and they showed no signs of being stressed. They were actually much easier to take camping than a dog! Thanks to the people who let me know shavings are okay - we had no smell issues at all.

Chicks are now happily housed in the **official** brooder - a very cute wooden / hardware cloth crate thing my husband made. It is very big and will house them quite comfortably until it is time to move them into the coop. It has a plywood bottom, and one solid wall and then 3 walls of hardware cloth. The top is hardware cloth with a wood frame door built in. I'll post pics when I get a chance :)

I hope everybody had a great Memorial Day weekend!

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Ugley chicken

Hi,

I was told that 3 of the chickens I bought are "Araucana's." Are they problably really Ameracaunas? They look like they have rumps but, I'm not really an expert on chicken bum shapes so I could be wrong...They are only a couple weeks old so no eggs yet...

Really?? Mine are colored all the way thru, and these are NOT "good" Ameracaunas, I don't think. Approximately what age will their eggs revert to brown? I had always though eggs might lighten/fade in color, but didn't didn't know the color could change so much.

Figures. Now I'll have to buy chickens to keep my blue/green eggs coming....

[CHICKENS-101] Free Range? Yes or no...

Hi,

I was hoping I could get some advice on whether or not I should free range. I live in rural RI on a 3/4 acre piece of property. The back yard (where the coop will be located) is fenced in - some stockade and some chain link. Not critter proof. Area predators are coyotes, foxes, racoons, possoms and hawks. I have not seen any of the four legged animals in our actual yard. I do see hawks flying. We have several big evergreen trees and a couple of deciduous trees in our yard. I think trees provide protection from predators? We have RI Reds, Araucanas, Barred Rocks and Black sex-linked. They are all the same age born around 5/15/10. There are 12 chickens. We have no other pets. We will have a garden but it will be fenced in separately.

I would really like to free range them because I think they will be happier and healthier (other than if they get eaten) and that the eggs will taste better...But, I can make them a really nice large run if that is the best option. It will just be very expensive...

Thanks in advance!

Re: [CHICKENS-101] interesting chicken story

Hi Jane,

We really enjoyed the story! Thanks for passing it on.
Since I don't currently own any chickens, I haven't been writing.
But I read a lot of the emails, I am getting a lot of good information for when we do  get more hens.
The show about our hen Plucky aired on April 29th. If you would like to see it, go to "thebostonchannel.com".
Then click on Chronicle hd(on the left hand side). Then type in "Wild things"(at the top). The show is in 4 parts.                    We are in parts 1+4.
Let me know what you think?
Sharan
