I liked the following idea for homemade feeders & made mine using a square cat litter bucket & empty food container. The feeder just hooks onto the side of the chicks pen up off the ground.

My silkies are famous for being broody. If i go out to collect eggs a little later in the day, one or more will decide it's time to sit! They are wonderful mothers! With that being said, my tiny little silkie moms take care of their babies forever. They pass them from silkie hen to silkie hen. All are housed in the same area with full size hens, BOrps, RR, and you should see a silkie hen ..peck the heck out of anybody that goes near her young! They are little spit fires when it comes to their kids! Kinda like me i guess! Just an FYI.. Might not be true for all, but i know my silkie babies are safe right in the hen house with the rest of the crew. I threw out a few corn on the cob last night, and one silkie mom reserved one for herself and her two children and wouldn't let ANYBODY get near it. RR, Red star, Golden Comets, all the big girls had to share, but didn't dare go near momma silkie and the babies!

What I wrote or meant to write was Ameraucana. This is an entirely different chicken than an Araucana. True Araucana from Chile are rumpless and are one of the few breeds that lay real blue-green eggs. They have a breeding problem due the a lethal gene. Ameraucana on the other hand may or may not be related to the Araucana. These chickens are bred by hatcheries to cash in on the green egg hype. The color for the most part only on the surface of the egg and will come off with enough scrubbing. As the hens get older the egg color reverts to light brown in most cases, depending on which hatchery bred what to what to get green eggs.
