[CHICKENS-101] Re: Ugley chicken

"The color for the most part only on the surface of the egg and will come off with enough scrubbing. "

Really?? Mine are colored all the way thru, and these are NOT "good" Ameracaunas, I don't think. Approximately what age will their eggs revert to brown? I had always though eggs might lighten/fade in color, but didn't didn't know the color could change so much.

Figures. Now I'll have to buy chickens to keep my blue/green eggs coming....

[CHICKENS-101] Re: chicken stuck in food container......

Saw this simple fix using plastic funnels on YouTube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_zqV3yEKDs

I liked the following idea for homemade feeders & made mine using a square cat litter bucket & empty food container. The feeder just hooks onto the side of the chicks pen up off the ground.

[CHICKENS-101] interesting chicken story

Hi Georgia, yes my days are often full. The painting of the pots has been very enjoyable. I love crafts. I am painting them all different colours, how did you guess? I had two in shell shapes one is black the other white.

Then I have seven in shapes of wooden barrels I had done four so far in yellow, red, green & blue sadly our severe winter weather killed the Hebe in the blue pot & to top it off the frost got into the pot & the concrete is all crumbling away.
Then I have the one I am working on at the mo which has a flower detail on four corners.
So I want to make sure that it stands out but not certain what colours to do yet? Thinking maybe pale blue (my fav colour)  background, green stem & leaves, red flower?

I also have lots of concrete ornaments (Picked up at car boots & from free-cycle etc) All repainted.
My favouite is an old man & an old lady sitting on seperate park benches they are really sweet. I imagine me & dh in years to come sitting on some bench somewhere feeding the squirels.
Prob won't happen as I would love nothing more than to retire down by the sea, I love the sea soooo much!

Another project I started but have not finished (due to lack of spare time, & last years heart op slowing me down) is that I am going to have a white picket fence(made out of old pallets) all round my front garden & get rid of he discusting pungent smelling hedge that is a constant pain keeping tidy.
I have all the new plants in front of the hedge growing nicely , When the fence is ready I am going to pressure wash the roots of the old hedge out(easier than digging) And I am going to plant loads of aubreitia in the clean de weeded soil.It is going to look great.

MY dh then has to make me the wooden archway he has promised (Out of recycled wood from an old work bench.)

Don't think I could cope with your waking & sleeping pattern.lol.
It is horrid & wet here again today, the girls don't seem too worried about it though, still roam about digging in the dirt, occassionally I see them huddle under the shelter I made them from old wooden pallets! It is also where their dust bath is, every now & then I add another bag of sand,& some more mite powder.
It is a battle keeping the cat's out of it though they seem to like using it as kitty litter.
Any way I better stop typing got loads to do today, Take care. Jane & Co.

[CHICKENS-101] Silkies

My silkies are famous for being broody. If i go out to collect eggs a little later in the day, one or more will decide it's time to sit! They are wonderful mothers! With that being said, my tiny little silkie moms take care of their babies forever. They pass them from silkie hen to silkie hen. All are housed in the same area with full size hens, BOrps, RR, and you should see a silkie hen ..peck the heck out of anybody that goes near her young! They are little spit fires when it comes to their kids! Kinda like me i guess! Just an FYI.. Might not be true for all, but i know my silkie babies are safe right in the hen house with the rest of the crew. I threw out a few corn on the cob last night, and one silkie mom reserved one for herself and her two children and wouldn't let ANYBODY get near it. RR, Red star, Golden Comets, all the big girls had to share, but didn't dare go near momma silkie and the babies!

[CHICKENS-101] Re: Ugley chicken

Emily: Correction

What I wrote or meant to write was Ameraucana. This is an entirely different chicken than an Araucana. True Araucana from Chile are rumpless and are one of the few breeds that lay real blue-green eggs. They have a breeding problem due the a lethal gene. Ameraucana on the other hand may or may not be related to the Araucana. These chickens are bred by hatcheries to cash in on the green egg hype. The color for the most part only on the surface of the egg and will come off with enough scrubbing. As the hens get older the egg color reverts to light brown in most cases, depending on which hatchery bred what to what to get green eggs.
