[CHICKENS-101] Chicken with sore vent...what do I do?

Hi all,
I have two hens (mostly brown with a bit of white on them, probably just common old British layers) a year old approx.
One of them has a red area just above her vent, where the first row of feathers come through. Not sure what I should do to help her?
Their coop has had louse and mite powder sprinkled on the bedding. The other hen seems fine. The affected hen takes more dust baths than her friend when they are allowed to roam the garden.
Also, I have had a few days recently with only one egg - not sure if it is normal resting period or something to do with the problem?
Grateful for any advice you can offer!
Thanks in advance
Jenny (and Betty hen!)
P.S. I've only had them for a couple of weeks so new to all this :-/

Re: [CHICKENS-101] chicken stuck in food container......

We use that same feeder. It is meant to be suspended above the ground by a rope, wire, chain, etc. We use chain scrounged from one of those cheapo steel swingsets someone was throwing away. The feeder manufacturer makes a plastic cover that keeps chickens from trying to perch on top of the feeder. I got mine from Meyer Hatchery one day when I was there because I was tired of chicken $#!+ in the feed. You slide the chain up through the cover and the cover just rests on the top bump in the handle. Other manufacturers offer a galvanized steel cover that does the same thing or you can easily make one out of a Frisbee by drilling a hole big enough for the chain to pass through. The cover is intended to flop around if a chicken tries to perch on it. To refill with feed you just slide the cover up the chain.

YIKES!  Went to feed and water my RIR chickens this morning and one was stuck head first in a food container!  Not sure how long she was stuck in there, but she couldn't turn around or figure out how to back out of the container.  I took the container apart and she came right out.  She seemed a little stressed out and very thirsty.  Here's some pictures from earlier......

Heather, It would be the 22nd or 23rd of June. Can you for sure make it then?  Cath

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Broody and Maybe Babies -Georgia - Inside

And how do you have chickens inside? Whats the setup? Are they caged? I
have a couple of favorites that I would love indoors but all they seem
to do is eat and poop! I had my babies in the closet for awhile until
they become heat/cold tolerant, then moved them outdoors.

Thank you, thank you, Jenny!     I have to go to Dollar Tree anyway for those red light bulbs.  Adding frisbies to my list.

You could make a lid out of a frisbee. You could slit the sides for the handle to go through.

Seeings as how it's a RIR, I'm surprised 'someone' hasn't said it was probably in the midst of CHEWING its way out through the side of the plastic.  Maybe 'someone' is still out BBQing................

LOL must have a sense of humor seeing a chicken butt sticking out of a feeder :-) I think she is trying to tell you she was hungry and was looking for food :-)

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Georgia --> re: chicken stuck in food container......

As much as feed stores charge for those little pieces of red plastic, we could make a fortune if we divised one.  Needs to fit over the top and accomodate that wire bail handle!

LOL, what this list needs is an accomplished plastic extruder!

Thanks Georgia.  These food containers definitely need some type of lid.
