[CHICKENS-101] Re: Chicks!

Sure Sheryl,

I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to read emails until now. We have 18 new chicks and 10 new zealand baby bunnies now. The seller on ebay that I bought my orpinton eggs from was eBay Member: marieann0199. The French Wheaten Maran chicks were from my own eggs. I had a welsummer hatch this morning and more chicks hatching. Darla

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Starting Coop Construction Today any advise NOVICE!!!!

This heated water recommendation reminds me of our winter we just had.
I was going out to my coop at midnight and again at 4-ish am - both times with a boiling hot tea kettle in tow and pouring it into the water container for my birds.
I would also fill a milk jug with hot water and immerse it in their water.
We live in South central Texas, so I can only imagine how many MORE trips I would have made in colder climates.
I had a heat bulb for them and I WILL have a water heating device before winter sets in again !
Send photos of your new coop, I know what a fun day it is to have it all finished and little chickens with their suitcases and bonnets on come moving in.
Smiles, Marilyn

Hi John. The only thing I can think of is electricity if you haven't already planed on it. A heated water container makes life so much easier.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Mean Rooster

i have tried the same technique and it does work alot of the time. Unfortunately my favorite only respected me afterwards and not the kids. He went to a large open range farm with no kids and a gazillion girls (with the farmers knowledge of his naughtiness) and has been doing just fine. He must like his freedom or feel less threatened there. But I miss my big guy:(

I have a year old Dark Cornish roo. When he was about six months old he attacked me. I cought him and just held him under my arm for awhile looking him in the eye and rubbing his comb and wattles and his neck and down his breast and over his back. After a while I put him down and for the next two or three months he was fine. Then we did it all again. Lots of times when I show up he goes up onto a pen about eye level with me. I reach out as I walk by and rub his breast now. He follows me around but doesn't attack me anymore. But I've had roosters I couldn't get to quit attacking me, no matter what.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Mean Rooster

oh George, it is nice to see that after months of being off group(no internet) that you havent changed a bit.:)
I have dispatched several nasty roos in the last year, including my favorite who turned nasty for unknown reasons and after three strikes he was out. I refuse to take chances with my kids and I dont like watching my back while collecting eggs. For every nasty roo out there , there are ten sweet boys that are headed for the stewpot because you cant keep them all.

My feelings are well known to the old timers in the group. No one with small children should have a rooster running loose. RIR roosters are well known for their bravery of the field of combat, some credit them for Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo. They are valued by those in Recycled Automobile Parts industry for night time security. They are a first line of defense against Aluminum Siding salesmen. They serve as way to get revenge on nasty neighbors. BUT they should not be kept in close proximity to small people. I do not believe in harsh punishment. If you cannot enlist your rooster is the local SWAT team or find otherwise suitable employment it should be dispatched quickly with the least amount of pain. For those who live in areas that permit it, A large firearm should do nicely. In more urban settings an axe is acceptable.

I know for those of you long time members this is just a rehash but we get many new members all the time ...SO this is for them and those who need their memories jogged :)

We have fewer rules then most groups but those we have are strictly enforced.

1) Trim you replies ... leave only the one (1) message you are replying to ...not 1.5 or 2 just one.
2) Picture sizes should be between 50-100 kb...no more ...if you don' know how to resize please ask.
3) Signature lines / cards .... these can be no more then 3 lines total.... this means 3 or less not 4 or whatever.
4) Be respectful in all you write... this is a family forum and as such no foul ( not fowl )  language will be tolerated and those that flame or are rude will at the very least be moderated or removed. Write as if it was a reply to your Mother :-)
5) Off topic posts are allowed but remember to put "OT" in the subject line and reply privately if way off topic.  However religion and politics are not good subject matters.
