Re: [CHICKENS-101] Silkie trimming question

Dawn, Gently pluck the feathers from around and above their eyes.  They will love you for it. Cathryn

2 of my older Silkies are in need of some feather trimming around the eyes.
How does one go about doing this?

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Building a coop from pallets

I did that one time, back in the 70's.  But I did not dismantle the pallets or skids, I used them as they were.  Skids are solid anyway, and I added extra boards to the pallets.  It was a fine chicken coop.

A while back there was a discussion about building a coop using pallets. Todays "Mother Earth News" had an article about doing just that.
Check it out

[CHICKENS-101] Re: Two Chicken Questions

Hi Faith, this dude sounds like a throw back to something out of Jurassic Park. Does it growl? I mean even an RIR would think twice before challenging a pitbull cross. Killing cones do make life a little easier. A gallon milk jug with the bottom cut off nailed to the side of the barn. You might have to make the opening a bit large for the head but with a sharp knife it's all over pretty quick.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] cause for concern?

Your non laying chicken is stressed from her journey.  Give her time to relax and get accustomed to her new environment.

Hi guys.  Another question already.  I'm not sure if I should be concerned.  Saturday morning I picked up a Wyandotte and a Buff Orp.  We were up north a little ways so they stayed in a temp shelter.  I said goodnight to them around 10pm Saturday and on Sunday around 8, was greeted with a broken egg.  No biggie.  During church ( they were together in a cage in the back of the rig, another egg was laid.  Great!  2 eggs in less than 24 hours!!  Whoo Hoo.  They're both laying.  Yippee.  Since Sunday egg during church (between 10 and 12) I have gathered 1 egg every day about 11:30.  Mon, Tues, today.  No more, no less.  Just about 11:30 on the dot.  This is causing me concern that maybe the other isn't laying.  The girls are supposedly 9 months old and have been confined to the coop so I know they're not laying else where. 4 eggs in 4 days?  I'm probably being a worry wart but I just want to make sure.  They are eating grain and are able to peck and scratch to eat all the worms they want from the ground (no floor in the coop),  I was told when I picked them up that sometimes they might back off laying but then once they settle in they'd be right back at it.
Help?

Tami
