Re: [CHICKENS-101] HEN killed my new young guinea

Cats are inherently evil, even though I have a cat who had easy access to my chicks without hurting them.  You will live easier without Mini Jet, so don't lose your resolve.  My live trap is referred to as my 'Cat Trap', and it's caught numerous ones, far more of them than possums.

I am so sorry this happened.

I'm so sorry for those who have lost babies.

We lost a baby White Leghorn yesterday afternoon.  We had moved them
outside to the temporary cage and we never thought one of the cats could
get to a chick but Mini Jet got on top of the cage and snagged a baby.
We tried to rescue it from the cat but weren't successful.  Needless to
say the top of the cage is completely covered and the cover is weighted
down by old carbide wheels (which are pretty darned heavy).  When I
catch Mini Jet, he's going to the pound without a second thought.  He
won't eat another one of our chicks and live to brag.

We're so sad.  :-(

[CHICKENS-101] Re: cause for concern?

Hi Tami, I don't think your chickens need any help, you on the other hand....?:) The fact that you are getting any egg at all tell me you have at least one really laid back hen the other one will come along.

> Hi guys. Another question already. I'm not sure if I should be concerned. Saturday morning I picked up a Wyandotte and a Buff Orp. We were up north a little ways so they stayed in a temp shelter. I said goodnight to them around 10pm Saturday and on Sunday around 8, was greeted with a broken egg. No biggie. During church ( they were together in a cage in the back of the rig, another egg was laid. Great! 2 eggs in less than 24 hours!! Whoo Hoo. They're both laying. Yippee. Since Sunday egg during church (between 10 and 12) I have gathered 1 egg every day about 11:30. Mon, Tues, today. No more, no less. Just about 11:30 on the dot. This is causing me concern that maybe the other isn't laying. The girls are supposedly 9 months old and have been confined to the coop so I know they're not laying else where. 4 eggs in 4 days? I'm probably being a worry wart but I just want to make sure. They are eating grain and are able to peck and scratch to eat all the worms they want from the ground (no floor in the coop), I was told when I picked them up that sometimes they might back off laying but then once they settle in they'd be right back at it.

[CHICKENS-101] Two Chicken Questions

1. Do Turken roosters crow? Got one as a curiousity (ugly evil looking thing)and it's got all the rooster behaviours but no crow. Stunted spurs and a huge giggley wattle. No Crow. It's hateful to others and aggressive towards my pitbull dachhound mix dog. Even took his milkbone treat. Darn thing's luckey to be ALIVE. Go figure.

2. Killing Cones (for said Turken): Do most of you use them? I'm setting up the slaughter area and can't decide between a big log for hatchet use or a cone station. I've got some disability issues with my upper body and holding a chicken and wacking it is problematic.

Takin' it to the next level of egg and meat production...
Not a hobby anymore.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Sheryl but your cat was just being a cat. Hard for him to understand you hadn't just provided him with tasty snack.
