First ID tape worm - yes this is important. You need a de wormer that destroys the tape worm's scolex, not just knock off the tail segments. Worminator on a schedule if this is the appropriate wormer, (Victor at Twin City Poultry Supply).  Butynorate/Tonostat is used too, and is one of the most effective  but you need to know which dewormer to use. Next mix horse scoops ratio: 2 of wood ash, 2 orchard sulfur (comes in 50lb bags) and 6 scoops of lime, mix in wheel barrow, put on ground like thick like a thickly powdered sugared doughnut, till in. Plant with grass, dandelion, and chick weed seed. Keep up dewormer on a schedule for several months.  You will also need to get rid of grain beetles that live in litter, eating spilled grain.  You will also want to try to do way with slugs, flies, earth worms, ants, grasshoppers, snails, ETC who are all intermediate hosts for tape worms.

We are having a bout with tape worm here!  We've been treating it with Valbazen and we thought we had it under control. Then, they seem to be back, and even  greater then before! We keep our chickens ultra clean. What is causing this and what can we do?! Sorry for being a pest...I'm sure this has been addressed a million times before!

Home Depo has a horrid wicked witch, so I was standing behind her, holding the boys, trying to make it look like SHE was holding them.  Therese 'fixed' the photo for me and OMG, it really looks like the witch is holding those poor chickens, getting ready to eat them! I have been laughing all afternoon over this and just wanted to share it with you guys here. Here's both pictures, so you can see what was done. This picture needs to win a prize!

Could be... While my town allows up to 8 chickens, the code specifically states eggs are for the owners consumption only and may not be sold or bartered... so no 'eggs for sale' sign by my mailbox!

Then My hb got a job transfer to Western Pa, I did my homework and called every township zoning commissioner before we decided on a house to make sure we'd be allowed chickens at our new home. We decided on a house with .7 acres. weird thing is when the zoning commissioner in our new township read the zoning ordinance to me ( 3 chickens per acre) he then actually said I'm allowed 1 1/2 chickens! He is also the chief of police! So, How do I do that!?!??

Hi Debra

Typically 1 ½ chickens means 3 bantams or 1 rooster and a hen.  Towns in Western PA are far different than Eastern PA and have a lot higher restrictions.

Not much you can do but just accept that.  I would recommend checking with the town council as well as the chief of police takes orders from them and not the other way round.

Best of luck

Elizabeth

Eastern PA
