Re: [CHICKENS-101] little chick fell from the perch

Larry, That is a good idea. The patches that get warm?  Not sure that would work for a chick, they are much more fragile.  I am going to store your solution in my files and try it if I have a chicken hurt a leg.

Let me tell you what I did with a full grown hen that seem to wrench or sprain her hock when getting out of the way of a more dominant hen. Up as close to the hock as the feathers would allow, I wrapped a Salonpas Pain Relieving Patch around her leg and left it on for the 8 hour period recommended and then took it off. She seemed a little better. I skipped a couple of days and put on another and after that she was not limping and walking normally. Don't know if this will work for a chick, but just sharing what I did.

Little chick is about half the size of her siblings (not a banty) and is always trying to do 'like the big chicks'. well apparently last night she tried to get too high on the perch and fell hard. when she stands she doesn't put weight on one leg and doesn't seem to want to sit with any weight on that side either.

I've put her in a box in the kitchen for the moment. would like a few pointers on how to help her recooperate and when the time comes how to reintroduce her to the flock.

thanks for your help

Re: [CHICKENS-101] little chick fell from the perch

If Little Chick were mine I'd: Because birds get sick easily from any kind of stress I'd put Chick on an antibiotic.  I'd splint her little leg with horse tape and a band aid, put Chick in a large, long, hospital box in my laundry room with a radio on low, a low watt light bulb in the corner Chick can get under or away from.  Chick would have vitamins in her/his water, and time to heal.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: got a question

When we turn on the sprinkler thae chicks don't run away from it, they run through it!  Just like kids!  The past few days have been cooler because of the tropical storms over on the coast, but I expect a hot, hot summer.  I usually put ice cubes in their water in the summer and it helps some.  Susan

Re: [CHICKENS-101] bumpy eggs with thin shells

Do they have enough calcium?  I grind up my egg shells and feed them back to the chickens with their feed.    ACV in their water may be a boost for them also.  Not much help, but good luck.  Are they young chickens?  Susan

Hi guys! haven't been around in a while, no news is good news!! All is well except for the last few weeks I've had one of my girls laying eggs that have a bumpy-gritty build up on the narrow end of the egg, and the shells are so thin that they are broken about 99% of the time when I go to collect. This is only one girl...any thoughts?? the bumps range from tiny round grains of sand-to larger barnacles.
thanks for any info!

RE: [CHICKENS-101] Treating Cocci with apple cider vinegar?

Hi Cathryn,

I know how deadly cocci is and I normally treat it with Sulmet, youre recommendation the first time I had trouble. The problem was that I didn't discover them being sick until I was heading out for work and I was all out of sulmet. I wasn't going to be home until after 5pm so I gave them the apple cider vinegar anyway knowing I would treat with Sulmet as soon as I could. I have treated them all with Sulmet. Only a handful of them look sick, but the Coop floor looked liked a slaughter house this morning when I looked in. It had several larger red bloody spots.

Of course my favorites are the ones that are sick.

Get a cocci med asap so you don't loose them. ACV will not kill the protozoa that causes cocci. Albon, Dimethox, Corrid, there are several other meds you can use too.

Is there any truth to treating Coccidiosis in poultry with Apple Cider Vinegar?  I Just turned out about 30 juveniles into their permanent coop.  The coop and run are new so no other chickens have lived in it before.  This morning I noticed droopy chickens who wont eat and bloody stools.  I don't have any sulmet on hand and cant get any til I get home from work this afternoon so I gave them apple cider vinegar in the meantime.  Anyone ever used this treatment before?
