[CHICKENS-101] Re: did your chickens get a present

My chickens often get hot oatmeal on a frosty morning, but Christmas morning, I mixed in a can of cranberry sauce. Boy did they ever love that!  I wished them all a Merry Christmas, and I have no doubt that they undestood every word!

Many Blessings to all for a wonderful New Year, and don't forget to watch the Rose Parade tomorrow morning!  I hear there will be a special float in honor of Roy Rogers, celebrating his 100th birthday (had he lived that long), followed by 100 golden Palomino horses! Now THAT will be spectacular!

[CHICKENS-101] Re: did your chickens get a present

I had shoulder surgery November 9. Yes, it is painful and I am doing PT. It doesn't hurt quite as excruciatingly as it did BEFORE the surgery though. The doctor is saying I should be completely back to specs by November 2012. *Crosses fingers* I had gotten to where I couldn't even lift 10 pounds of feed. The chickens didn't much like that. Especially since I couldn't lift the 3 1/2 gallon waterers. ~30 pounds. It's funny you should say I am my chicken's present. They had pretty much quit laying and DH was complaining about it. I got my staples out and was allowed to go out of the house and visit them. They were very excited to see me. They have also been laying about 4 dozen eggs a day. :D They were laying max. 11 per day and we have A LOT of hens. It was like they said, "We're SO glad to see you! Where have you been? We thought a predator got you. Here! Have an egg!" It's nice to see them too. Angelique

Thanks, Cathryn. He's accumulated a lot of that wood. Most of the coop
is from recycled stuff. The front door is one that was to his
department at work and is solid metal (no windows). The company decided
it was dangerous not to be able to see who was coming in the door so
they changed it and was going to throw that one away. Don salvaged it.
The back door was an old one from our house. I'd rather have it on
the front because of all the windows but he won't change it. Lol.

Those bcm roosters are something else. I had read that they were
supposed to be fairly docile. I'm not sure I believe that because I
have to carry a stick in the yard with me every time I go. They've been
whacked enough that they get out of my way when they see the stick. I
tell Roux-Roux that if he doesn't behave, he'll become Roux-Roux Stew.
They really are pretty though and I have toyed with the idea of putting
one of them with the 2 bcm hens in a separate coop to see if we can
raise our own chicks. I guess we'd have to get some eggs to do that
though and the hens are on strike!

The windows above the nest boxes are actually on the inside dividing
wall but the whole back of the coop will be open to the air so lots of
light but also good shade for them when it gets so hot. It will be
enclosed with chicken wire reinforced with welded dog pen wire. The
dirt floor will have a layer of wire to prevent predators digging into
the coop.

Our Blue Andalusian's and Black Minorca's like to fly up onto the top of
the chain link fencing and fly down into the fresh grassy part so Don is
even going to put a wire covering over the entire yard to keep them
contained. They never go outside into the unfenced area (thank
goodness) but they do fly into and out of fresh grass sections at will.

Have you been feeling well? Have a good Christmas?

Happy New Year everyone!

Sheryl, That was a lot of work to get the lumber to build your coop.  I like how you divided it up, have the nest boxes so you can gather eggs from the window, your pens so one is always green, and the window is very large to keep your coop bright, sunny, and airy.  The rooster joke is cute! You have pretty roosters and hens!

Our Black Copper Marans were laying but we haven't gotten an egg from
them in months. We only have 2 hens but we were getting one egg almost
every day and now absolutely nothing. There's no sign of them hiding
eggs or eating them.

I just uploaded some pics of our new coop in progress if anyone would
like to take a look. There's also a pic of our 2 bcm roosters on the
page.

You can't talk to your cousin and the chickens are over everyday.  The rooster would disappear into my cooking pot.  A trail of grain to the coop anything to get the rooster to where I could catch or shoot him.  Poof, he is gone along with the problem.

I have 6 girls. 1 Game, 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Barred Rocks and a RRI. My cousin across the street has all Games. They come over everyday. I don't mind, but they are starting to take over. The rooster has been eyeing my girls. I don't want him to defile them (ok, I don't want more chicks) Any who, I really don't want the games mixed with my girls and have 1/2 breeds. How do I get them to go away without turning the dogs out? Can't talk to cousin....she's a strange on and would be very miffed. I don't want to rock to rock the boat....any suggestions?

Ours got banana bread my DH oops on. He didn't eat it when it was perfect so they got an entire loaf. Just an update: Chickens weren't laying for beans after my shoulder surgery. I started going out there and interacting with them and they're laying like mad. Angelique
