Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Poss-A-Dillo Hill is moving to Florida.

I can get Mr. Percy to fly up to get you!  Chicks and eggs can go in the space behind the seats.  Except it's more than a 1 day flight.  How are you at sleeping under wings?

Welcome to the group,Susan.

I use either stainless steel or rubber water bowls. It doesn't hurt them to freeze and the ice is easy to break out before refilling.

I've kept chickens for 29 years and have found that often when a morning is REALLY cold the chickens will sit on the roost while the water freezes if I give it to them too soon. It's better to wait until the chickens are off the roost and active before giving them water. And I've found that in a particularly cold spell if they get the chance to get all the water they want once in the day they will get enough. During a prolonged cold period they will need to have water available more than once though. But it really isn't necessary to keep water available at all times during cold weather like it is in hot weather.

Eric

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Morning in the chicken coop

George, I'd have a head to toe space suit or something similar on if you do try to pet it and make sure it can't escape in case it bites.  Rabies shots and banned from the house would not be pleasant. Cathryn

Congratulations, George, you too now have skunkies.  We love our skunkie darlings.

You can provide it with food and water over the winter and it is not likely to spray.  They only do this as a last resort.  Also there are no baby skunks at this time of year.  Babies are born in May and it's now November!  If it gets used to you, you can pet it while it is eating.

It's also possible it is someone's pet that escaped, and descented and spayed/neutered.

Thanks, Laura!  I hadn't actually thought of  doing a book about about Alex!  But you're right, he does need a book about him. For all the pictures I have tortured this group of him with, I have DOZENS more in his album!  Most of Alex's adventures are indeed funny and heart warming.  But some are downright heart-rendering.  I don't want to start a political fight or anything, but last week, we were in the bank and there was a little (probably about 12 or 13 years old) MUSLIM girl there with her father...grandfather...? She wasn't in a Burka or anything like that, obviously very "American".  Dreassed in jeans and a shirt and she had a cell phone.  She was adorable and she totally freaked out over Alex and the oppertunity to hold him. She could barely let go of him when we had to leave....it was like parting with part of her soul!  I actually snapped a picture of her before her father could say anything.......but it has affected me ever since.  When I think of the horrors a little girl like this would be exposed to in her home country, I could only thank God she was "safe" here...hopefully.  For as much 'healing' that Alex brings to others, there are just as many times that I come home with some profound thought and inspiration as well.  Yes....a book is in the works.....

Deb

It's an even longer drive now.     Way longer than I can do by myself. :(  :(   I'm back in a heart monitor,  with a fib off and on, after the endocrinologist put me on that darn cortisone. How can we trade chickens and eggs if I have to fly?? :(  Cath

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Some Roosters

I'll get it in gear and get your new silkies off to you soon.  I have a Blue guy who raises chicks and sits on eggs with them.  He would be perfect for you.  He is not street wise to predators.  Cathryn

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Some Roosters

These two guys were hatched together May 30. They may be the last of this line as something took off with Black Bart and 3 of his hens leaving me with two pullets and a small clutch of 3 eggs. I have no idea which hen was responsible for the splash Roosters. It could be one of the two remaining hens or one of the ones that went south. It happened last year and I sent "Spot" to Cathryn. If Back Bart contributed the Splash genes then they are gone. Anyway, Cathryn has advised me not to continue breeding to close, known as "Line Breeding", as my little flock could use some improvement. So what do I do with these two guys. They are quite happy together at the moment. It's just a little rough on the 3 hens. But that could change. If any one is interested I have a box. You would really have to want them real bad the freight is over $50.00. just for one. I would consider delivering if it's not two far. Say a couple hours from the Mass./NH border in any direction.

They are not identical but very close.
The other alternative is to keep one of the roosters and get new hens for him.
Ol' George
