Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Respiratory problem - please help! Gape? MG? Cholera? Update

LOL! Kristen, MG, ILT, and IB are not rare. :)  I am glad you emailed Hake, he will think of something to try. The 4 in 1 medication might be a good idea to try. It's on back order but should be in soon. Who suggested fowl cholera? Fowl Cholera is rare. I missed that post. How he is today?

So my 4 mo old roo is more loved than ever by my daughters and he's still kickin' but still gaping once in a while. Cathryn suggested I call Twin City Poultry, but I can seem to get them on the phone, so I'm sending them this email. Perhaps someone out there knows what's up with this miracle chicken????

Hi Hake,
Cathryn from the chickens101 yahoo group suggested I contact you in regards to an ongoing health problem w/ my 4 mo old rooster. He was near death a couple of weeks ago and his condition has her stumped. Me too - and I've read all sorts of websites regarding the diseases & conditions she suggested. Perhaps you might know what might know what's wrong!
Here's the history: about a month ago, this guy was looking dull and sitting alone and I separated him from the flock and put him on tetroxy for 7 days. He seemed better and we eventually put him in a separate section of the chicken run and house. The only other symptom besides being thin and huddling was the occassional gaping of his neck and opening of his beak.
During the day, my daughters would play w/ him (he's the only chick we ever hatched and is quite timid and imprinted on us) and he seemed okay except for that gaping behavior. After about a week of this and of being in the separate area in the coop (which stressed him out I'm sure), I found him at dusk wheezing and blue and apparently suffocating. I removed him and put him in a cage in our basement where, for many days, he had bouts of struggling to breathe, stretching his neck out, beak open, some gurgling, some cough-like noises. The night I brought him in, I gave him tetroxy again. But then someone suggested Sulmet in case it was cholera, so I switched to that the next day and he was on that for 6 days. He was also wormed with your worminator in case of gape worm and I also gave him a pea sized amt of safeguard horse wormer paste. He was near death for sure.
He's been off the Sulmet for a week now and lives in a cage in the sheep shed with free range of the shed or outside in the yard during the day. He's perky, acts like a normal chicken, has a red comb, eats great, has gained weight etc. BUT he still gapes -- stretches out his neck and opens his beak - once in a while - as if something's stuck in there. Sometimes shakes his head too and may have a little substance come up into his throat when he does that. I often think this behavior is correlated to when he starts to crow (which happens rarely) but maybe not. Poo looks fine. No canker seen.
So, my question is: if this were cholera, gapeworm, MG or one of the other serious/rare diseases Cathryn mentioned, wouldn't he be dead by now? I'm just worried that suddenly I'll find him all blue and struggling to breathe again. And should I be giving him a different medicine (antibiotic?) right now to prevent that?
Thanks so much for any suggestions you may have!

So I did it for 7 (I remember doing it for the least amt written there) and, no, I didn't get a chance to call Hake today. I run a nature program for kids here at my farm on Fridays (and I homeschool my 2 girls) and it was a whirlwind of a day. I'll try tomorrow in case they're there.
