Re: [CHICKENS-101] Chicken addiction is real

We go on vacation for 3 to 6 weeks or more at a time.
We have a wonderful neighbor who stops in every morning and every evening to feed up and call us to report in.
We do however, have the hose connect watering devices now , we OVER stock trash cans of too much food, We have timers on the lighting and sprinklers on timers. All he really has to do is feed them once or twice a week and gather the eggs daily. He keeps the eggs.
THEN when we return home we GIVE him a gift card for $100.00 to his favorite restaurant and he drops by OFTEN for a glass or 2 of wine on us.
So, essentially - you pay to play.
Do the birds get the same one on one treatment I give them ? Auh No....................
But all in all it seems worth it to us.
He is also eyes and ears and security for our home, he gathers our mail everyday. It is waiting for us when we get home.
Other neighbors come and pick the okra and other garden things.
We miss out on allot of our own veggies if we go away at harvest.
So I prefer to travel during the fall and winter when the birds are molting or the garden has finished its top production.
Smiles, Marilyn n Fischer TX.

Theresa, You have family and friends over for cook out and share your home entertainment with them.  Built in vacations in your back yard? Cathryn
Hello, I have been reading here for a while. I saw many people talking about their chicken addiction and never expected it to hit my family.

Last fall we raised 25 meat birds and put them all in the freezer. Then my kids (12, 9, and 7) started asking for some chickens they could keep and love. So we built a second coop and bought 3 laying hens this spring, one for each kid - plus the free rare from McMurray (it is Polish and I fell in love with that one.)
I decided to grow 4 turkeys - 2 for us and 2 to sell (if they all make it).
Then the feed store called and said they had another shipment of turkeys... did I want more? That is when the addiction first reared it's head... My two turkeys were already spoken for... what if one died? Ok, back to the feed store for 4 more turkeys.
Yesterday, my daughter (the 9 year old) asked if she could start an egg business. After much deliberation (a whole day!) we decided she could and ordered 20 RIR along with some more meat birds. Time to build another coop! (We also accepted the free rare with that order.)

So that brings us up to 58 birds we will have when the new ones arrive! I have a feeling I am only getting started - we have a lot of space to move pens around in.

From a very simple plan to grow our own food... eat a few sell a few this has exploded. How will we ever go on vacation again?

Theresa
